There is something in the way artists see and frame images that contribute more to a their aesthetic than, say, painting technique. That's why 99.99% of the time I prefer to shoot my own models. But this summer I went against mt own rules and worked extensively with a photographer I admire greatly (this chica: :icon5letters: ) to collaborate on this painting. If you don't know her work you should head over to her page right now and get lost in all her dreamy imagery. We emailed back and forth for most of the summer, tweaking the process as we went, shooting ideas and images back and forth through email and skype until I finally felt that we had something that was a true amalgam of both our processes. She took hundreds of photos - the majority of which I fell in love with and will one day use for some future works, but this is the one that stuck.

This painting is currently on view at Scope Miami during the Art Basel Art Fair. If any of you are in Miami this week please feel free to visit Like the Spice's booth and say hello.

reminded of a line from Arcade Fire: "...we're still all kids in buses, longing to be free."
The entire piece screams youthful themes: the chair (time out), the gadgets/toys on the bed, her pose, the closed door, her hair even (Raggedy Ann).

Good looks man! I truly enjoyed seeing this :)

I love your interpretation. I think it perfectly compliments the psychology and narrative I had in mind while painting it.

Brilliant, as always!! Very nicely juxtaposing beauty and misery.
It's a pleasure to look at it, even when the content is pretty disturbing.
And the empty, white wall makes the picture beautifully airy and light.

Thank you so much. I'm glad the subtlety of this piece is not lost. And I do apologize for never getting around to go that gallery hop as promised. How about we make good on that this January?

Usually the characters on your paintings are self confident, but she doesn't seems to be that way, is interesting to see the shift, like adding something new to your palette sort of speak, nice work.
